Chalice Lighters
September 2017 through May 2018
Serving First Universalist Church of Minneapolis
Chalice Lighters serve an important role in our worship tradition, lighting the chalice before each Sunday service. Our 3rd-5th grade Chalice Lighters bring a sense of wonder, reverence, joy and beauty to our chancel. In return, the experience gives them a sense of confidence, satisfaction, pride and belonging in a community that sees and values their contributions.
A special way to give, receive and grow
Chalice Lighters are kids who choose to serve because they want to contribute in this particular way. Parents are encouraged to allow their children to make the decision about serving as Chalice Lighters. There are many ways to contribute, and by allowing our kids to volunteer for this role, we ensure they are ready and willing to pay attention during the training, get themselves ready and to church on time on the Sundays they serve, and see themselves as positive participants in their Religious Education classes and the larger church community. That said, our Chalice Lighters consistently report looking forward to Sundays when they'll be lighting the chalice, appreciating the chance to be part of leading the service with the ministers and Worship Associates, and feeling glad they chose to sign up. It's fun, it's meaningful, and it's cool. ;)
